How and why are seeds able to grow on cotton balls instead of soil?

I remember doing a lab in my 4th grade science class which consisted of observing the germination of seeds. We used a petri dish and moist cotton balls, instead of soil, for the seeds to grow on. How come the cotton balls worked just as good as the soil would have?

Seeds can grow on alot of substrates as long as they are moist and stable enough to allow the plant to grow upwards without toppling over. The problem with cotton balls or tissue paper is that they don't contain minerals that the plant requires for growth. That means that the plant will only be able to grow for a short time without starving for nutrients. If you add a fertilizer solution the plant could probably on cotton balls indefinitely. That is essentially hydroponics.
